*WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD*

This is a serious movie, with a serious topic, the miserable lives of widows in India prior to independence (and to this day). It was beautifully shot, wonderfully written, and superbly acted. All in all a fantastic, sad movie.

It gets negative points simply because I can only bear so much sadness. As soon as the beautiful prostitute widow mentioned she was going to marry the dashing young John Abraham, I realized this was going to turn out badly, and I couldn’t bear it, so I just fast forwarded to after her death. The end was really sad too, and I was crying quite heartily.

John Abraham was about as hot as he can get. And also, he can act, which is really nice too.

It brought back fond memories of my time in Varanasi.

It also made me realize that John Abraham would make an EXCELLENT Krishna in my Fantasy Mahabharata Movie. Mmm. Did he look good playing flute by the water in the dark or what?

If you love young hot widows carrying puppies, and being serenaded by hottie Indian men, and also love having your heart ripped from your chest and then slowly, meticulously tortured until it is nothing but a sad crust of pain, then THIS is your movie.

I second that motion. My mom and I were bawling by the end of the movie, but it's the kind of sadness that's really rather constructive. It makes you want to contribute something to society so that things like that don't have to happen.

I think John Abraham would make a great Arjun. He's got that whole glamorous, throw-yourself-at-me-women kind of appeal. Then again, I'm picky when it comes to Krishna. So far, only Nitish Bharadwaj has managed to truly BE Krishna.

At this point, I'd give anything for any VAGUELY hot Arjuna and Krishna. :)

Hear hear!

I still maintain that they could have picked a hotter Arjuna. I mean, the man looked better as Brihannala than he did otherwise, which is kind of sad. Speaking of which, remember that random conversation about getting movie clips of Arjuna learning how to dance on the LJ mahabharata community? I nabbed the DVDs from home, so when I get some time, I'll probably be able to make that clip.

I just had an idea. How about Puru Rajkumar as Arjuna? He's fairly good-looking (he played Naseeruddin Shah's role in the old Umrao Jaan, in the new Umrao Jaan movie (the god-awful one with Aishwarya Rai), and ended up being the only reason that I watched a good portion of that movie).

Puru Rajkumar? Ugh. :)

Why the "ugh"? Granted, he'd have to be trained up properly, but once that happens, he can't be all that bad, can he?

Sorry, but he just doesn't scream "Arjuna" for me. John Abraham = Krishna, Arjun Rampal = Arjuna, Abhishek Bachchan = Karna, Hrithik Roshan = Duryodhana, Vivek Oberoi = Satyaki, then Pandapony = Heaven! :)

Google Shiney Ahuja. I just saw him in Gangster: A Love Story the other day, I think he'd make a PERFECT Duryodhana. I think Hrithik would be better suited to Karna. He can pull off the existential angst. Vivek Oberoi would make a great Satyaki, though, with that I definitely agree.

Can we make Nitish Bharadwaj Vyasa? *chuckles* Although, it would take a hell of a lot of makeup to make him look scary. Ambika and Ambalika would be hard-pressed to be reluctant, I'm thinking.
